If you’re new to mining, the units can be confusing. This guide explains hashrate, what TH/s and GH/s mean and how they affect your profit.
What is hashrate?
Hashrate is how many calculations a miner performs per second while searching for valid blocks. More hashrate means more chances to earn block rewards.
The units
- 1 KH/s = 1,000 H/s
- 1 MH/s = 1,000 KH/s
- 1 GH/s = 1,000 MH/s
- 1 TH/s = 1,000 GH/s
- 1 PH/s = 1,000 TH/s
- 1 EH/s = 1,000 PH/s

Hashrate vs efficiency
Raw hashrate isn’t everything, efficiency (J/TH) decides how much power you burn per terahash, and therefore your profit. Two miners with the same TH/s can have very different running costs.
From hashrate to profit
Your share of the network equals your hashrate divided by the total network hashrate. Plug your numbers into our Bitcoin Profitability Calculator to see real estimates.
